WebM vs MOV for Transparent Video: Containers, Codecs and Alpha
Transparency is a property of the codec, not the file extension. This is which codec carries an alpha channel, which editor opens which file, and what to export for each destination.

A Container Is Not a Codec
A container is a file format holding video, audio and metadata tracks together. A codec is the compression scheme encoding the pixels in one of those tracks. The extension names the container, so it says nothing about transparency.
MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV are containers; H.264, HEVC, VP9, AV1, ProRes and QuickTime Animation are codecs. A .mov may hold H.264 with no alpha channel or ProRes 4444 with a full one, and that imprecision produces black frames.
Alpha support is a codec property: only a handful encode a fourth channel beside red, green and blue, the only routes to transparent video.
The Formats That Carry Alpha
| Container · codec | Alpha and size | Reads it |
|---|---|---|
| WebM · VP9 or VP8 | 8-bit plane, small | Chrome, Edge, Firefox |
| MOV · ProRes 4444 | 8-bit 4:4:4, very large | Pro editors |
| MOV · QuickTime Animation | Lossless RLE, largest on grain | Universal, legacy |
| Folder · PNG sequence | 8-bit, no audio, very large | Every editor |
| MOV or MP4 · HEVC alpha | 8-bit, small | Safari, Apple tools |
| WebP · animated | Better color than GIF, small | Browsers only |
| JSON · Lottie, vector | Native, tiny | Players, no footage |
| GIF · LZW indexed | One palette index, large | Everything |
| MP4 · H.264 | ✗ | Everything, smallest |
A PNG sequence is the safest interchange, refused by nothing, and carries no audio. ProRes 4444 is what an editor expects; QuickTime Animation only when ProRes is unavailable, since run-length coding needs flat pixels. HEVC alpha is Safari's counterpart to WebM, not a replacement.
Why H.264 Cannot Carry Alpha
H.264 as deployed encodes three channels, one luma and two chroma, and the profiles in universal use across phones, cameras, browsers and platforms have no place for a fourth. The specification defines auxiliary picture layers, but no consumer encoder writes them and no decoder reads them.
So an MP4/H.264 file cannot be transparent under any setting, and it is what every platform asks for. You cannot deliver transparency to a destination that only takes it: composite the background first, or key a green screen.
Animated GIF: Transparency, Not Alpha
GIF stores an indexed palette of up to 256 colors per frame, and one entry can be flagged transparent, so a pixel is fully opaque or invisible. An 8-bit alpha channel stores 256 opacity levels per pixel.
Hair, motion blur and soft shoulders need partial opacity, which one palette index cannot express, so those edges come out jagged and fringed with the encoder's chosen color. That constraint, not file size, is the real limit when you remove the background from a GIF.
Which Editors Open What
| Reads | MOV alpha, PNG sequences | WebM alpha |
|---|---|---|
| Premiere Pro | ✓ | Convert first |
| After Effects | Premultiplied or straight | Inconsistent |
| Final Cut Pro | ProRes 4444 natively | Convert first |
| DaVinci Resolve | ✓ | Varies by version |
| CapCut | Consumer MP4, MOV | ✗ |
| Chrome, Edge, Firefox | ✗ | Plays it inline |
| Safari | HEVC with alpha | ✗ |
After Effects, the likeliest destination for a handoff, sets premultiplied or straight alpha interpretation when an edge looks wrong. CapCut is for a finished composite or green-screen clip, not alpha.
Why QuickTime Player Shows Black
QuickTime Player composites video against a black backing rather than a transparency-aware surface, so a correct ProRes 4444 file with clean alpha renders as your subject on black. Nothing is broken.

If the subject sits over the layer beneath, alpha is intact.
What to Export, by Destination
| Destination | Export |
|---|---|
| A web page you control | WebM/VP9 alpha, plus HEVC alpha for Safari |
| Handoff to an editor | ProRes 4444 in a MOV, or a PNG sequence |
| iOS or Safari | HEVC with alpha, MOV or MP4 |
| Android or Chrome | WebM/VP9 with alpha |
| A social platform | MP4/H.264, background composited |
What This Tool Exports
bgremover.ai writes MP4 (WebM in browsers that cannot write MP4) with the background already replaced, or a green screen behind the subject. It writes no alpha channel.
If your destination needs one, export the green-screen version and key it in your editor for control over spill and edge, or composite the background you want in the tool itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Formats Are Supported, and What Is the Output Format?
Input is anything your browser can decode, in practice MP4, WebM and MOV. Output is MP4, or WebM in browsers that cannot write MP4, with the background composited in: a scene, a background color, or a green screen.
Can I Get a Transparent Background?
Not from this tool today: it composites a replacement background or a green screen into an MP4 (or WebM), with no alpha channel. For real transparency, key the green-screen export and render ProRes 4444.
Why Does My Transparent Video Look Black?
Most often because your player composites against black instead of honouring the alpha channel, as QuickTime Player does. Check it on a timeline over a colored solid. If the file is MP4/H.264, transparency was never there.
Which Editing Apps Can Open the Export?
A WebM opens in every browser, and in Premiere Pro and Resolve depending on version. For a reliable handoff use ProRes 4444 in a MOV, which Premiere, After Effects and Final Cut read with alpha.
Is WebM Smaller Than MOV?
Substantially, for the same picture. VP9 is a lossy delivery codec; ProRes 4444 is an intermediate codec built for editing, storing far more per frame. WebM for delivery, ProRes for grading.
What Happens to the Audio Track?
Not confirmed. Whether the WebM export carries the original audio track has not been verified, so this page does not claim it — check one short clip first. A PNG sequence carries no audio at all either way, which is why an editor handoff built on one needs the audio delivered separately.
